Sing It With Me!

Yes, it's official...we'll be "coming to America" in a few weeks! I know, I know in the song, they yell "today!" But, apparently Neil didn't think the song had quite the same punch when he sang "they're coming to America...in a few weeks!" And admittedly, he probably wasn't talking about the Martins, but hey, it's our current theme song, so I'm going with it.

Actually, we didn't plan on coming back to the US until the summer of '09, but once we got here, we realized that that's a REALLY LONG TIME. Singapore really is a nice, relatively easy place to live and adjust to, but I was missing home quite a bit. So I talked to Colin and after lots of begging, pleading and crying (Colin did the crying), he agreed that it'd be a good idea for me and the kids to go back home for a visit. We're all SO excited. (Well, all of us except for Colin who will have to stay behind and work. Hey, someone's gotta earn the money! This trip ain't cheap, ya know!) Anyway, we'll be back June 13-July 27. We'll spend about a month with mom and dad in Illinois and then drive down to Nashville for a couple of weeks and stay with my friend Jeni. Can. Not. Wait.

Not only am I looking forward to seeing everyone, I'm a little giddy at the thought of shopping at Target. And Kohl's! Oh I've missed them! Here in Singapore, they don't have stores like that. Don't get me wrong, they have hundreds of malls and clothing stores, but the clothes over here are primarily for Asian women who all happen to be just a tad more petite than me (blasted Anglo genes!). And even though I've come to terms with the fact that I can't fit into their diabolically small clothes, I can't even make myself feel better by buying a pair of shoes because I can't squeeze my gigantic size 9s into the size 7s which are at the top of the Singapore size chart. So I'm really looking forward to going into a clothing store, grabbing my size and seeing that it fits. That and not having to hear the Chinese owner say, "Oh, you too big! You need extra large!"

Another thing...communication is a problem here. Though English is a main language, most of the time we have absolutely no idea what the locals are saying, and even when we understand the words, we still have no idea what they mean. More on this in another post, but as an example...we went to a restaurant and ordered water to drink.

"Orange?" asks the waiter.
"No, water."
"Orange?" he asks again.
"No, water."
"Orange," he says.
"No. Just waaaa-terrrr." We practically sign it.

It was exhausting, but we did eventually get water. I mean, how difficult is that?? To this day, I still don't know what the confusion was about, but after being here awhile and seeing how they confuse the language, I think that what he meant was "lemon" and what he meant to say was, "Would you like a lemon in your water?" But who knows? Maybe he really did want to bring an orange to our table. Believe me, that's a possibility, too. Anyway, we're really looking forward to talking and being understood.

Hey, it's the little things.

And now I think I'll put on my Gloria Vanderbilt jeans...or maybe Jordache, crank up my Walkman and listen to Neil sing about us coming to America...in a few weeks!

More later!

call me provincial, but always knew I did not want to live in a foreign country. For any US haters reading this comment, you only think that way because you've never done without like my cuz. So here is a good thing, I am planning a little Midwestern trip myself about the time of your visit. So maybe an unexpected treat will be visiting with my Martin cuzns.

My "California Cousin", as we like to call her, brings up a point that I've meant to mention. Now's a good time, I suppose.

First, though, a sidenote...if you listen to that song and don't feel (even a little) pride for America, quick, check your pulse!

OK, yes, we're living a pretty comfortable life over here in Singapore and we're nothing like the "huddled masses" that came over as immigrants (though I am flying coach!). But there's something about being so far from America that makes you realize how great a country it actually is. (If it wasn't so great, why are so many people from other countries desperate to come in??) The freedoms that we're allowed and the life that we're able to live are enviable among other countries. Anyway, my point is that I'm sure that we'll come away from Singapore with some great experiences and will have learned alot from our time over here, but I know that one of the biggest things that we'll have learned is that America really is the best country in the world. Sure it's nice to visit other countries; maybe even live there for awhile, but there's no place like America!

One more thing...no, I did not put that little video montage together. Mom saw that on YouTube and emailed it to me the other day. (If you think I'm excited about coming home, just talk to my mom!) Watching it gave me the idea to put it in my blog, so... thanks Mom!

But after listening to "America", I was in a Neil Diamond mood and I couldn't stop at just one song, I had to listen to "Sweet Caroline", "Forever in Blue Jeans", "Song Sung Blue" -- you get the idea.

Seriously. Where ARE my Gloria Vanderbilt jeans? I could put those on, comb my hair like Princess Di and my time warp would be complete.

That's good news !!! I'm happy for you guys. Just keep one thing in mined on your adventure. Home is where the heart is. I know sounds like something your grandma would say right. But it's so true I've lived in California for a log time and Chicago is still home so no matter where you go home can bee far away. What dose being a us hater have to do with having nothing ? In the USA you only need to move as far as Houston to see how many people live just like they do in Singapore. The USA is not the best it may be the best for you and me. But we have all kinds of trouble in this country and things are getting worse so if people like the martins live with people of different thinking it will help bridge the gap in man-kine . Think life has given you many adventures and there will be many more so just sit back and enjoy the ride. Have a safe trip .

That is so cool! I know it will be strange "living" next door to your own home... but I'm sure you spent so much time at Jeni's anyway...it won't be that different! :-)

Let's do get together while you're here...maybe we can do a girls' night or something. I really do feel like I know you.

Did Colin tell you what I said when he came over? I answered the door and said, "Hi. I'm not Jodi." LOLOL (which I'm sure he knew right off the bat) :-)

It was so god to meet him and we really are glad he came by!

Safe travels and I look forward to meeting you soon!

Katie

By the way-- HUGE Neil Diamond fan here. I'm hoping my music taste will come back in style one day! Neil Diamond, John Denver and (hanging head in shame)...Barry Manilow.

OMG, did I really put that in print?

Alrighty, Jodi, if I didn't know and love you, I'd be OFFENDED by the petite comments. JK! Actually, can you bring me some clothes? Maybe I need to do some serious shopping in China b/c this 4 foot, 11 inch lady cannot find ANYTHING at target! And the stuff at Kohl's that fits--well, let's just say that a 35-year-old has no business wearing it! LOL! Seriously! You think I am kidding but I am not! And guess what my shoe size is--6.5! So maybe some shoe shopping in China is in order. Hey, did you hear our news?!? Check out our website, www.youbelong.net/theirwins and I'll PM you with a little more "info" (PICS!) since I can't post that on our site just yet. Now we wait for official approval and travel notice. But we are *planning* for fall travel. And we will be in the sourthern part of China, is that far from you? I guess it is. Geography is not my strong suit!

And as always, your posts are hilarious! You really need to look into stand-up comedy when you have some free time. What is that?!

So glad to hear you are coming to America too, but sorry for Colin. We'll be praying for safe travels and happy hubby despite his family leaving him behind!
:) Leslie

We are counting the days until you get back to 'America'! We know traveling coach w/2 little ones will be an experience. But, we have started praying for God to make this a memorable and safe trip. We know Cameron will be a big help.
The weekends are filling up...do you think you could extend? =)
I read some of the comments and your friends mention your writing/comedy skills. Have you performed your barnyard joke routine for them? If not you need to brush up and treat them to your comedy.=) Or, think of what the people of Singapore are missing....there's an opening. Look for a standup comedy club. You may the next 'Steve Martin of Singapore'.
Enjoyed the video. But, I think Cameron could have done a 'bang up job' putting pictures to the song. We'll put him to work when he gets here.
We are sorry we will miss seeing Colin but are so thankful for a son in law who loves you enough to give you and the grandchildren this trip home.
Pack lightly so all your Kohls/Target and Wal-Mart purchases will fit on your return trip. Or like dad says 'you can always buy another suitcase'.
God bless and keep you safe. May His hand be upon you for safety peace and patience.
love you!
